Our Keynote Speaker
Dr. Monique Gary
The Promise of Precision Wellness
As medicine becomes more and more tailored to the unique needs of the individual, how can we make sure that we are not just focused on disease but on the whole person? What’s the science behind wellness for cancer survivors and thrivers?
“Dr. Mo” – is a breast surgeon, educator, and advocate for wellness. Dr. Gary currently serves as the Medical Director of the Grand View Health/Penn Cancer Network cancer program, where she also serves as director of the breast program. Dr. Gary believes in the power of the connection between mind, body, and spirit to promote overall wellness, and is passionate about addressing the disparities in health outcomes for marginalized people. By both exploring the inequities that lead to these disparities and helping to create pathways for access, Dr. Gary’s work, which has been published online, in print media, and featured in peer reviewed journals, aims to make wellness – physical, mental, and emotional – accessible to all. Dr. Gary completed her medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and her general surgery training at UMass, followed by the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital. She holds faculty appointments in surgery and serves as the Adjunct Associate Professor of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and as a medical advisor/contributor for national breast cancer advocacy organizations, including Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Touch, the Black Breast Cancer Alliance, Tigerlily Foundation, The Chrysalis Initiative, and the National LGBT Cancer Network. Beyond her surgical work, Dr. Gary is building a movement to achieve true health equity and help communities develop holistic and integrative approaches to cancer care and wellness. She is CEO of Still Rise Farm, a 40-acre farm that was founded as a “living, learning, laboratory” for cancer patients and under-resourced, marginalized communities. The farm, intended as a one-stop destination for wellness information, resources, and support, is located in Upper Bucks County, PA, where Dr. Gary can be found teaching mindfulness, body positivity and sexual wellness, and the principles of “food as medicine.” Dr. Gary can also be found on radioOne stations in Philadelphia giving tips for healthy living and cancer risk reduction, and weekly on Blackdoctor.org as the co-host of “The Doctor Is In”, a web series dedicated to promoting survivorship in breast cancer patients and arming them with both science and support for their journey.

Kate had a remarkable introduction to yoga as a senior in college more than forty years ago and it was an immediate match. She has been vibing with it ever since in an adult lifelong relationship. Early on when yoga teachers or classes were scarce in the U.S., she created home practices for herself while working in marketing and advertising. A bunch of years later, after marriage and three children in quick succession, she returned to yoga classes which were more prevalent by then. She trained with well-trained teachers and worked to receive certification to teach Ashtanga yoga with Manju Jois in 2001. In the years since, she has studied much more in Ashtanga, Mindfulness Meditation, Trauma Informed Yoga, Yoga for Kids, Functional Anatomy, Hatha and Vinyasa while teaching in studios in the Philly suburbs. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, it changed her direction. She began to work with Qi Gong and other energy movement practices to heal, recover from treatment and understand the role of energy in health and illness. It is the movement of energy in fields, pathways and centers that can be influenced and balanced to maintain health and vitality. She received Master Teacher of Energy Medicine Yoga certification, founded by Lauren Walker, in 2019 and continue to study Qi Gong and other healing theories and practices. Today she teaches virtually, primarily with a dedicated following. But also works individually or in small groups with those who are facing health challenges or concerns. She likes to surprise the energy curious as they discover their own energy movement for the first time. She studies something in this field daily and continues to uncover layers of depth in energy work that connect us to our Earth, our health, and our state of being. https://www.kategarza.com/
